A local woman has opened a new salon for those who want to tame their unruly eyebrows or hairy legs. Waxing The City offers hair removal services for men and women in the Midlands.

The company was started by four women who opened the first store in Denver in 2003. The waxing studio since then has expanded to more than 20 locations nationwide and expects to open nearly 40 more later this year.

“I learned very early on how a simple eyebrow wax or a lip wax can change a person’s whole day,” said co-founder Alex Jimenez, who has been a licensed aesthetician for 18 years.

Local owner Karen Ingram started her franchise after searching for a business that would allow her to serve her community. The Harbison location is the first Waxing The City salon on the East Coast.

“I wanted a business that was very customer-service oriented,” Ingram said.

Waxing The City offers full body services including its most popular: the Brazilian wax. The company developed a special wax blend that when applied, Ingram said, customers describe as painless. The company also invests in weeklong training for staff to become cerologists to ensure they offer customers a professional and pleasant experience.

“It does not have to be a bad experience it can be a really good experience,” Ingram said.

Ingram said her male customers also are coming in to get their eyebrows, nose and ears waxed.

“We’ve had a lot of customers that have never been waxed before,” Ingram said.

Ingram also made it her mission to reach out to the community by supporting local nonprofits including the Junior Woman’s Club of Columbia.

“It’s always been a huge part of our model … that we want to give back to the people that give back to us,” Jimenez said.

Waxing The City is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The salon is closed Sundays. Prices and a services list can be found at the salon’s website.
