Mark Kirlough, Ron Lanham relieved of coaching duties at Columbia High School

Columbia High School will be looking to fill two spots in their athletic program before the beginning of the next school year.

Head boys’ basketball coach Mark Kirlough and athletic director Ron Lanham have been relieved of their coaching duties, according to both men.

Kirlough, who has been head coach of the boys’ basketball team for the past 22 years, said he was told by Columbia High Principal Shenequa Coles that she wanted to take the program in a different direction. Coles could not be reached for comment, and Lanham declined to comment on the situation.

“I have enjoyed my time as a coach at Columbia High,” Kirlough said. “It really has consumed my life for the last 25 years. Needless to say I’m not pleased with how it ended. I’m sure there are other opportunities out there and I’m investigating some at this time. I would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the years.”

Karen York, communications director for Richland School District One, confirmed that both men would not be returning to their athletics positions next year, but she said they would continue to hold their teaching positions at the school. York said candidates will be interviewed for both athletics positions soon.
