BB&T South Carolina president named Business Leader of the Year

One of Columbia’s own is being honored by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce for leading the way in bringing about positive change statewide.

The Chamber announced Tuesday that Mike Brenan, president of BB&T South Carolina, is the 2014 Business Leader of the Year. He’ll be recognized at the 35th Annual Summit in November.

Brenan’s involvement in the region encompasses being a past chairman of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce as well as being a board member of the South Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities Foundation, Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce and South Carolina Bankers Association. He is also co-chair of the TransformSC education initiative and was appointed by the governor to serve on the South Carolina State Board of Education.

Brenan, a Midwest native, became a bank president at the age of 34. He came to Columbia in 1999 before becoming state president in 2000.

“Frankly, Mike came here [to South Carolina] and he’s all in. He’s done everything he can to make the state better and the community better as if he’s been here his entire life,” said long-time friend Judy Davis, executive vice president and chief legal officer at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. “And frankly, he does it because he loves living here. And he just simply makes it better for all of us.”

The South Carolina Chamber’s Business Leader of the Year is chosen for superlative leadership in South Carolina and for having a business known for ethical conduct, public service and working to support a positive business climate across the state.
