Belk department store at Dutch Square Mall to close

Officials at Belk have announced the closing of a Columbia location.

The store in Dutch Square Mall is shutting down in January. According to Jessica Graham, vice president of Communications and Community Relations, the 91 associates employed there were informed last week.

Belk will be focusing “resources and efforts on the expansion and renovation of (the) flagship store at Columbiana Mall and on … other Columbia stores at the Village at Sandhill and Midtown at Forest Acres,” according to Graham.

“We are investing $6 million to expand and remodel our Columbiana Mall store, which includes the opening of a 50,000-square-foot men’s store in the former Sears building at the mall,” Graham said. “Construction is scheduled to begin on that store next month with completion set for March 2015. The décor and fixtures in the main store are also being updated with completion set for summer 2015.”

A going-out-of-business sale will begin Nov. 2 at the Dutch Square store. The final day of business is scheduled for mid January.

“We want to say a special thanks to team of associates at the Dutch Square store for their dedication and service to customers at that location over the years. We will be working closely with them to ensure a smooth transition period from now until the store closes,” Graham said.
