Mellow Mushroom celebrates anniversary with a taste of 1974

It’s been a long time since customers could stop in for a $2.50 pizza or a 30 cent soft drink at a restaurant, but Mellow Mushroom locations in downtown Columbia and in Lexington will take guests on a trip back in time Aug. 20.

The first Mellow Mushroom opened in Atlanta in 1974, and to mark the occasion all 170 of the restaurant’s locations will bring back selections and prices from the 1974 menu in a Way Back Wednesday celebration.

Brian Johnsey, operator of the local Mellow Mushroom, said the event fits the restaurant’s mission.

“We’re typically very community driven,” he said. “This event is a nod to the folks who have gotten us here. We wanted to give back a little bit and maybe meet some new folks along the way.”

The Vista location opened in 2003, and Johnsey said “it’s still going strong.” It will be open Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m., and the anniversary specials include 30 cents for Coke products, 75 cents for Michelob, Budweiser or PBR beer and $2.50 for a small cheese pizza.

There also will be a contest giving customers a chance to win a trip to Amsterdam for two.
