Belk at Columbiana Centre announces plan to expand into former Sears space

Belk will invest more than $6 million into its flagship store in Columbia starting this fall.

As announced by the company Friday, the existing Belk store at Columbiana Centre will be remodeled and eventually will expand into the former Sears. Plans are to relocate the men’s apparel and shoe departments into the space previously occupied by Sears.

When the renovations are complete, Belk will take up 242,000 square feet. The men’s store alone will be 50,000 square feet.

“We’re pleased to announce the addition of a new men’s store and other improvements to enhance our customers’ shopping experience at Belk at Columbiana Centre,” said Dave Penrod, chair, Belk Southern Division based in Atlanta.

Construction and remodeling in the former Sears space will begin in October with an estimated completion date of March 2015. Redesign of the existing store should be complete that summer.

In 2010, Belk invested nearly $2 million at the Columbiana Centre store when it enlarged the ladies’ shoe department and jewelry area.
