Sears stores at Columbiana Centre to close in March

The Sears and Sears Auto Center stores at Columbiana Centre mall on Harbison Boulevard in Columbia will close in early March, according to a spokesman for the company.

Howard Riefs, corporate communications director for Sears, said Thursday that the store’s lease was not renewed.

“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” Riefs said.  “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home.”

The Sears store has 76 employees, and the Auto Center 21, according to Riefs. He said all will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores.

The store will begin a liquidation sale Jan. 17.
