City of Camden looking to revitalize former Maxway Department Store site

Interested parties desiring to bring a portion of an historic city back to life are invited to work with officials in Camden.

The city has sent out a request for proposals for the purchase and redevelopment of the former Maxway Department Store site. The property is on the corner of Broad and Rutledge streets in the downtown Camden.

Featuring 265 feet of frontage, water, sewer, electric, gas and parking, the site totals 0.29 acres. It was home to the department store until it was demolished in early October.

“The city is asking that all interested parties submit proposals that would incorporate the historic nature of downtown Camden with the comprehensive vision plan,” said Economic Development Director Wade Luther. “This site is located directly in the center of historic downtown Camden and this RFP provides a unique opportunity for the future of our city.”

Evaluating the proposals will be the Maxway Property Development Committee. The team will evaluate proposals based on multiple aspects including price, planning design, proposed use and overall impact of the projected outcomes to the City of Camden.

Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Dec. 6 to the Camden City Clerk’s Office at 1000 Lyttleton St., P.O. Box 7002, Camden, SC 29021. Call 432-2421 for more details.
