Lexington County sites to host USTA junior tennis championships

Lexington County again has been selected to host two premier tennis events expected to draw thousands to the area.

As announced by tournament director Mary Hatfield, the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission will be the site of the 2014 and 2015 USTA Southern Junior Team Tennis Sectional Championships. Matches will be split among the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center, the Lexington County Tennis Complex and the Ball Park Road Recreation Complex.

Tournament dates are Aug. 15-17, 2014, and Aug. 21-23, 2015.

The site selection comes shortly after the United States Tennis Association awarded the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center with its highest honor, the 2013 Featured Facility Award.

“Great tennis facilities like the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center help us to grow the game at the grassroots level, and we are proud to recognize them for their ongoing impact on the sport of tennis,” the USTA’s Chief Executive for Community Tennis Kurt Kamperman said in a news release.

The Lexington County Tennis Complex is not without recognition, too. It received the USTA Facility of the Year Award for Large Facilities in 2003 and followed that with the Racquet Sports Industry magazine’s 2004 Municipal Facility of the Year Award.

“We are extremely proud to bring our annual junior team tennis championships to three great locations in Lexington County,” Hatfield said. “We know that (LCRAC Director of Tennis Operations) Jorge Andrew and his team will be a great host for our growing 3-day tournaments.”

The junior championships will feature coeds in four age levels: 10 and younger, 12 and younger, 14 and younger, and 18 and younger. Children and teens represent clubs, parks, recreation departments and organizations from around the country.

About 63 teams complete in the southern sectionals each year, hailing from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The Cayce complex previously hosted the 2012 and 2013 USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championship.
