Love for the arts leads to opening of State Street Trading Co. in West Columbia’s River District
There is another local vendor who will soon be opening a store in West Columbia’s River District.
State Street Trading Co. is owned by Lainie Lewis. The grand opening and ribbon cutting for State Street Trading Co. is Friday (Feb. 2.) Lewis, a member of the West Columbia Beautification Foundation, has a desire to help develop the area and she has a love for the arts. She’s combining he interests to create her new and eclectic shop. Working with only 600-sq-ft. she has been in the process of getting all her products situated into every nook and cranny at 134 State Street, West Columbia.
“I came up here from Florida after I retired to be a grandma and help my daughter. But after three years I was so used to working, I had to do something,” Lewis said. “This space became available and I loved the rustic look of it, I wanted to try my hand at it here in West Columbia.”
State Street Trading Co. will have art, antiques, jewelry, and other handcrafted gifts available in the shop. However, Lewis does not consider it to be a “gallery” space.
The items in the store have been acquired through different ways, including estate sales, local artists, and other items Lewis brought up from Florida.
Lainie’s biggest hope for the store is that people will enjoy coming in and just looking at the variety of items. “I want people to come in and fall in love with the objects as much as I have,” said Lewis.
One of her main goals is that her shop, along with other future vendors on State Street, will continue to bring business to the River District area. “We need more retail in these empty spaces next door,” Lewis said. “We have to fill up the street.”
She says she is very happy to be a part of the growth on State Street, and wants to be a good neighbor to her fellow businesses beside her.
