Gamecocks lose to Tennessee
The Gamecocks were in the game late, tied at 59, but then Tennessee (13-5, 4-3 SEC) took the lead and kept it the rest of the way.
The Vols won the game on the inside, outscoring South Carolina 32-16 in the paint. It helped that both of the Gamecocks’ main big men got into foul trouble.
Chris Silva, who averages almost 20 points in SEC games, scored just six and played only 25 minutes because of foul trouble. Malik Kotsar, another USC inside player, fouled out with eight points.
Justin Minaya and Wesley Myers each scored 16 points to lead the Gamecocks. who hit 10, 3-pointers.
South Carolina had a chance to reduce the lead to one or tie in the last minute of the game but the effort railed.
South Carolina travels to play Florida on Wednesday in Gainesville. The 7 p.m. matchup will be broadcast on the SEC Network with Mike Morgan doing play-by-play and Pat Bradley as analyst. Following the game versus the Gators, Carolina returns home to host No. 8/8 Texas Tech in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Jan. 27. Tip is set for Noon vs. the Red Raiders.
