Man shot early Friday in Columbia dies, coroner identifies, RCSD makes arrest

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the individual who died as a result of a shooting. The incident Friday occurred at 4 a.m.  at 7041 Parklane Road, Columbia.

James K. Copeland, III, 30, of Agard Street, Cumming, GA, was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where he died at 4:55 a.m.  An autopsy indicated the cause of death was due to a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Investigators with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department have made an arrest related to the shooting. There was an argument at the location which escalated in the parking lot. Additional details are forthcoming, according to the RCSD.
