S.C. Treasurer Curtis Loftis’ 529 Plan among lowest-cost college savings plans
State Treasurer Curtis Loftis has announced that the Future Scholar Direct Plan, administered by his office, was ranked as having the second-lowest cost among 529 plans nationwide in a recent 529 fee study by Savingforcollege.com.
The study compared 10-year cost totals of all direct-sold 529 plans using data found in official program descriptions. The lowest-cost plans were marked by having no annual fees and minimal expenses. The average annual cost to save with South Carolina’s Future Scholar Direct Plan came to $188 – close behind Louisiana’s 529 plan, which had an average cost of $152.
“It’s very gratifying to see that Future Scholar was recognized as one of the lowest-cost direct-sold 529 plans in the country. This ranking affirms our success in providing South Carolina families with a cost-efficient, trustworthy and high-performing college saving plan,” said Loftis. “We appreciate the recognition and continue to make it our mission to provide our account owners with positive and affordable college savings experiences.”
Drawing from this study, Forbes named the Future Scholar Direct Plan the second-best 529 plan in the country.
Future Scholar has more than $3.2 billion in assets and 143,000 accounts.
