Teens targeted white people in crime spree, says sheriff’s department

Two teens have been arrested and charged for an alleged spree of thefts, kidnapping and robberies in the Columbia area. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department held a press conference Thursday to announce the arrests.

The suspects stated that they did not like white people and that they were only going to target white people. The crimes were racially-motivated, said Sheriff Leon Lott, at the press conference.
Raquan Green, 17, and a 15-year-old are accused a string of armed robberies, carjackings and kidnappings that stretched from July 3-26, the department said. Green is at the Glenn Detention Center with a $40,000 bond.

“There have been seven separate incidents of armed robberies, some to include carjacking and kidnapping along the Bluff/Shop road corridor,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s department. “Investigators discovered that the suspects began targeting delivery drivers by committing armed robberies. The crimes then escalated to carjacking and kidnapping victims.”
When the suspects found out that one of their targets was black, they apologized to her and let her go, Lott said.

The incidents took place late at night when students were moving into housing or leaving their apartments in the area, and delivery drivers were out the sheriff’s department. The suspects took cash, cell phones and various electronics.
