Columbia Housing Authority to open public housing application process
The Columbia Housing Authority is preparing for the re-opening of the Public Housing Waiting List. The application process will be strictly online and will be available on Wednesday, August 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Following that date, the CHA will only accept applications on the first business day of every month, (i.e. September 1, October 2, November 1, etc.). The only way the CHA will make the public housing application available will be on www.chasc.org . There will be no application fee.
When applying for public housing, applicants will be able to select from five categories, Senior, Standard, Select, Cayce, and Eastover. The categories are distinguished as the following:
1. Senior – Minimum age of 50 years and older
2. Select – Employed for at least a year (working a minimum of 30 hours per week
for a continuous period of one year), or receiving Social Security benefits
3. Standard – All applicants 18 years or older are eligible
4. Eastover – Location outside of Columbia
5. Cayce – Location outside of Columbia
“We are excited to begin this new system for the public housing application.” said Gilbert Walker, CHA Executive Director. “It is important that we adjust our application process to provide applicants with more opportunities to apply, because having to deal with the
unpredictability of life is challenging enough.”
During the last four years, the CHA has only opened the public housing waiting list sporadically. The CHA hopes that creating a consistent schedule will allow applicants to feel more informed and better prepared about applying for housing.
