Joseph Patrick Arnot

Joseph Patrick Arnot, Sr. 89, of Columbia, SC passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017. He was born in West Orange, NJ to the late Robert John Arnot and Teresa Filan Arnot. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris Marie Strickland Arnot , a brother, Robert Paul Arnot, and a sister, Sister Mary Robert Terese.

In his youth, he was an avid bike rider. Following High school, he worked for Best and Company in NY. He joined the US Navy in 1950. Joseph met his wife of 63 years at the USO while stationed in Charleston, SC. where he was honorably discharged in 1954.
He and his wife shared a great love of music. They sang together for many years in both Charleston and Columbia.
He worked for the Port Authority and then for Nelson Motor Express. He went on to work for Yellow Freight Trucking Company where he retired in 1993 after 25 years of service.

He was a member of numerous clubs such as the Columbia Traffic and Transportation Club. He was also on the Port Authority Board of Directors in which he served as the president. He loved being a member of the Yankee Club and he was involved In the Berkley Forest Homeowners Association where he served as the president for two years.

He was commended in a resolution by Richland County for his extensive community involvement and for helping to improve the quality of life for Richland County citizens in 2001. He and his wife were honored and recognized by proclamations from Richland County Council and by the SC State House of Representatives for 50 years of marriage in 2002. He received a certification of completion May 1, 2003 as a Reserve Deputy for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in Columbia under Sheriff Leon Lott. On April 13, 2005 he was given permanent status of Reserve Deputy Emeritus. He was given the Service to Mankind award for his unwavering devotion to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and other organizations by the Richland Sertoma Club on December 21, 2006. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and a former member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Joseph was a jack-of-all trades, gardener and brick layer.

He will be sadly missed by his son, Joseph P. Arnot, Jr. (Cindy) of Lexington, SC, four daughters, Dorie Arnot of Columbia, SC, Mary Hudson (Francis) of Lugoff, SC, Anne Ruhfass (Tom) of Fairless Hills, PA, and Bridget Obley (Curtis) of Macon, GA, one sister, Teresa Ward of Florence, SC, twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

We wish to thank all of the Richland County Sheriff deputies and Leon Lott for all the support they have given Dad and our family over the years. We would also like to express our deepest appreciation to the Eucharistic ministers, deacons and many friends and family for their caring support.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 20, 2017 with Rosary service to begin 6:00 pm. at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia SC 29209 from 6- 8 pm. The funeral Mass will held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at St Peters Catholic Church, 1529 Assembly St, Columbia. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
