The new technology was announced Tuesday morning in Columbia at a press conference that included Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.

“The 100% fiber network from AT&T will contribute to our growing economy and high quality of life in Columbia,” said Benjamin. “Access to high-speed internet will help create new jobs, grow small businesses and improve access to educational opportunities.”

The one gigabit connection will be delivered via a 100 percent fiber network powered by AT&T FiberSM.

The offering is for customers in parts of the Columbia, including Richland County and surrounding communities. Fifteen area apartment and condo properties are included.

Columbia is one of 49 metro areas nationwide where the “ultra-fast internet service is currently available,” AT&T stated in a release.

About 20 more metro areas will be added to for the fast internet service. It now includes nearly four million locations nationwide, stated AT&T. The plan is to reach at least 12.5 million locations by mid-2019.

Internet-only pricing for AT&T’s Internet 1000, the fastest speed tier on the 100 percent fiber network, starts at $80 a month with a 12 month commitment.

AT&T also offers DIRECTV or U-verse TV services.
