UPDATE – Coroner identifies human remains

The human remains that were found off of Clemson Road on Wednesday have been identified.

They were the remains of Dennis Wayne Lancaster, of Elgin, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Lancaster would have been 62 if he would have lived. He was reported missing Feb. 13, 2016.

Lancaster died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the coroner’s office determined.

The Columbia Police Department with the Richland County Coroner are trying to find out more about some human remains that were found Wednesday. Police are looking through Missing Person records and asking other law enforcement agencies for clues to help identify the remains.

A person walking found the human remains in a wooded area around 1 p.m. off of Earth Road in Richland County, adjacent to Clemson Road.

Columbia Police Department investigators were on scene and an anthropologist examined the remains.

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said it looks the remains had been at the spot where they were found for a period of time. Investigators have not been able to determine the body’s gender or how the person died.
