Midlands households earning up to $64,000 are eligible for free state and federal tax preparation and filing services using MyFreeTaxes.com, United Way’s online tool powered by H&R Block, the agency announced.

In partnership with The Cooperative Ministry, United Way of The Midlands will also offer free in-person filing assistance, beginning as early as Monday, January 23, to households earning $54,000 or less through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA uses IRS-certified volunteers to provide basic income tax return preparation and electronic filing to qualified individuals throughout the Midlands.

Last year, The Cooperative Ministry volunteers completed 6,208 refunds in Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, Orangeburg, and Newberry counties. In addition to basic tax-preparation services, VITA ensures that all eligible, working families receive the Earned Income and Child Tax Credits they qualify for.

“We are proud to provide this important service in the Midlands because it allows individuals to maximize their income, plan for the future and, ultimately, live more financially stable lives,” stated Mac Bennett, President and CEO of United Way of the Midlands.

Eligible participants should bring a valid photo ID, Social Security card for all household members, W2s, bank account information, and other supporting documents.
