(Update) Motorist killed in Lexington County crash identified

Update Jan. 11, 2017: The person killed in a Lexington County car crash was identified Wednesday as Patricia Ann Steele, 52, of West Columbia, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said.

An autopsy performed on January 10 concluded that Steele died of massive trauma to the head and neck, Fisher said.

Original post: An unidentified woman was killed earlier this week following a car crash in Lexington County, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper David Jones.

The single-vehicle crash happened Monday around 3:30 p.m. on S.C. Highway 302 in the Pelion area, near the intersection of Cedar Creek Road, said Jones.

The driver, according to Jones, was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle westbound on SC 302 before leaving the right side of the roadway and striking a tree.

The victim, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. No others were reported to be in the vehicle or hurt in the crash.

The identity of the driver will be released pending confirmation by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.

Meantime, the wreck remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol, said Jones.
