Columbia Police officer charged in sexual assault of young girl
A Columbia Police officer is behind bars and facing a charges in the sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl, Columbia Police Department Chief Skip Holbrook said Tuesday.
Jamie Lee Rogers, 35, was arrested by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department on Monday and charged with first-degree sexual assault on a minor victim younger than 11, according to an arrest warrant.
The warrant alleged that between May and August 2013 at a location in Lexington County, Rogers forced the young girl to perform oral sex on him.
Holbrook said he learned of the charge Monday afternoon and “immediately terminated” Rogers, who had been with the department since March 2012.
Rogers most recently was assigned to the department’s North Region and patrolled North Columbia.
“We must be prepared to act swiftly anytime we learn of an officer violating the public’s trust,” Holbrook stated.
“Although the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has and continues to conduct a thorough investigation, it is this agency’s responsibility to hold officers accountable for criminal misconduct and any abuse of authority,” Holbrook said.
Rogers remains in jail after his bond was denied, and his next court appearance is set for Feb. 16, 2017, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
