Lt. Harold Lloyd ‘H.L.’ Gerrald, 81, loved supporting annual Shrine circus
Lt. Harold Lloyd (H.L.) Gerrald passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 18, 2016. He was 81.
He was born June 30, 1934 in Horry County to parents John H. Gerrald and Ina P. Gerrald. He was predeceased by his brother, E. LaRue Gerrald.
He was loved and adored by his wife of 51 years, Virginia Gerrald, and children, L. Mitchell “Mitch” Stephens (Patricia) and Angela “Darlene” Stephens, and granddaughter Lindsey E. Bible, as well as many other family members and friends.
He graduated from Green Sea Floyds High School in 1952 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. The bulk of his career spanned more than 30 years on the S.C. Highway Patrol from 1958 until 1989, and he earned the rank of lieutenant.
Throughout his life, H.L. loved God and made his involvement in the church a priority. He was an active member of Chapin Presbyterian Church where he especially enjoyed Sunday School, Men’s Bible Study, and activities for seniors.
H.L. was a 32nd degree Freemason and was inducted into the fraternity more than 50 years ago in Charleston. Most recently, he was a member of the Jamil Shrine Temple in Columbia and loved to support the annual circus through ticket donations to children. H.L was also a member of the S.C. Troopers Association and the Turtle Fishing Club. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and had a passion for the outdoors. He especially loved birds and landscape beautification.
A celebration of his life will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at Chapin Presbyterian Church at 600 Old Lexington Hightway in Chapin and will be conducted by Reverend Tim Hanley. Entombment will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at 5400 Bush River Road in Columbia.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at Temple–Halloran Funeral Home at 5400 Bush River Road in Columbia.
