Report: South Carolina has highest rate of women killed by men in U.S.

South Carolina has the nation’s highest rate of women killed by men, according to a report released Wednesday by a national nonprofit educational organization.

The Violence Policy Center study is based on 2011 statistics and finds that 61 women were killed by men in that year.

According to the VPC, more than 90 percent of the victims knew their killer and more than half were current or former wives or girlfriends of the killers.

Fifty-seven percent of victims were killed by gun, according to the report.

According to its website, the VPC “conducts research and public education on violence in America and provides information and analysis to policymakers, journalists, advocates, and the general public.”
